James Governor on the case for Thingamy and Situated Software. We're entering an era of customisation that could turn SAP and Oracle into last century's fish and chip wrapping... If you build software to solve a particular business problem, though, isn't it likely to taste bad when you go and install it somewhere else?... Thingamy takes a different approach, partly predicated on the notion that user-defined customisation is where business value arises. The software doesn't treat users like idiots. Sig talks about objects, and really means it. I was taken with the approach: a lightweight policy-based Work-Flow engine built into the software, sitting on top of an object oriented database (Object Data Base)... Who are the people that really know how a process works- what happens when a person makes a business decision? The person making that decision and their immediate colleagues, or a professional business process modeller based in the Czech Republic? Toyota understands that people on the shop floor can optimise business processes. All truly great businesses enable the creativity of their employees rather than driving the enterprise as a top down time and motion study. That is the direction software must take.

We (Know Mad-s) *are a Creative, entrepreneurial school, but Knowmads is also much more than a school. It is a platform for Entrepreneur-s who want to make a difference in this world... Our program is based on action learning in a team setting. Within this we connect social and sustainability issues with value driven entrepreneurship... With each theme, partners bring in an assignment and one employee. As a tribe, together with that employee, we are going to work with knowledge, feeling and ideas. We are then presenting a real working solution for the assignment/challenge the partner brought in. (more)

Esther Dyson recently ceased investing to focus her attention on a new challenge, HICCup... an initiative to set up citywide health (Public Health) intervention programs in five or six communities of 100,000 people or fewer. HICCup’s team of “counselors” will work with community leaders and spokespeople in these cities to make small and everyday changes to improve health, like a Friday night soccer game or new school lunch options... HICCup will support these communities in any way it can, including helping them forge partnerships with larger health companies. HICCup will measure over time how some of the new programs are actively making a difference — “‘BigData’ up the wazoo,” Dyson puts it... Dyson fears that many of the early-stage health IT startups are too insulated in Silicon Valley, one of the wealthiest communities. She recommends breaking out of “the bubble,” and having conversations with the “99 percent,” people who are balancing family budgets around healthy food every day.
John Luik says the WHO's Health Promotion (Physical Fitness) policies are loaded with Pseudo-Science. Take, for example, one of the most extensive and publicized efforts in health promotion of all time, the Mr Fit (Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial) which was specifically designed to establish the truth of health promotion by showing that Heart Disease and Cancer could be reduced through reducing Blood Pressure, Cholesterol Level, and Smoking. After sixteen years of study, the intervention groups, which had received extensive assistance with exercise, changing diet and Smoking cessation, had results which were not significantly better than the group that had received none of these "health promotion" interventions. Indeed, the intervention group, despite lower rates of Smoking, actually had higher rates of lung cancer. What Mr Fit showed was precisely how Life Style interventions failed to reduce mortality from multifactoral diseases like cancer and heart disease. Nor was Mr Fit a scientific fluke. Consider the Framingham Study. Begun in 1950 as a longitudinal investigation of the causes of cardiovascular disease, some 5,209 men and women aged 30-59 were followed for 30 years on the assumption that those who were thinnest would have significantly lower risks for Heart Disease. But in 1979 when three of the study's lead researchers published their data it was found that for men the highest risk - that is the worst Life Expectancy - was for the thinnest men; men who were 25-40% fatter than the ideal weight were living the longest. For women, mortality was elevated only for the very thin and the very fat. The recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study on Obesity and mortality produced similar results. (Public Health)
